Sir David Jason on playing it straight

Steve Clark, author of Only Fools and Horses – The Official Inside Story, on Cash and Curry, one of two great episodes of Only Fools, which are repeated on BBC One on Tuesday.

“In Cash and Curry, Del gets embroiled in a deal with two Indian businessmen – and at one stage he kicks a burly minder between the legs. Del then says one of Sir David Jason’s favourite lines….

“‘The businessman goes on about having a big house and lots of land,” Sir David told me. ‘Then Del says: “Yeah, and he’s got a couple of acres an’ all, hasn’t he!” It’s a brilliant line. You can’t go wrong with stuff like that. We always tried to play it straight because the jokes are there in the script. I always used to say: ‘Don’t put a joke on a joke,’ then it works better.”
