Steve Clark, author of our superb book Only Fools and Horses – The Official Inside Story, has interviewed the stars and members of the show’s production team at great length. Here is a short clip in which Sir David Jason reveals why he changed his name from David White to David Jason.
“In Cash and Curry, Del gets embroiled in a deal with two Indian businessmen – and at one stage he kicks a burly minder between the legs. Del then says one of Sir David Jason’s favourite lines….
“‘The businessman goes on about having a big house and lots of land,” Sir David told me. ‘Then Del says: “Yeah, and he’s got a couple of acres an’ all, hasn’t he!” It’s a brilliant line. You can’t go wrong with stuff like that. We always tried to play it straight because the jokes are there in the script. I always used to say: ‘Don’t put a joke on a joke,’ then it works better.”
