Drama at the launch of Derek Martin’s autobiography An East End Life

Splendid Books had a launch party for Derek Martin on Friday to mark the launch of his autobiography An East End Life. Held at Waterstones, Piccadilly the event was attended by friends, family and members of the press.

Halfway through, the proceedings were interrupted when the building was evacuated by the police because of a security alert. A suspect package had been found in Piccadilly and the whole area was locked down.

Derek and his guests sheltered in shop doorways at the back of the store and after an hour they were all allowed back in. Derek joked: “I grew up during the Blitz so this isn’t new to me – but back then we had shelters to go to!”
